The Board of Trustees Approve the Renaming of École Coloniale Estates School

BEAUMONT, AB – Exciting changes are underway at École Coloniale Estates School as Black Gold School Division Board of Trustees proudly announces its new name: École Horizon Heights School. This thoughtful change represents a fresh identity that celebrates inclusivity, aspirations, and the strength of its learners.

The renaming process was deeply collaborative, engaging students, staff, and the broader community. Students explored Beaumont’s history and future through meaningful projects, showcasing their findings and ideas. Student voice was strong throughout the process and their enthusiasm and creativity contributed to the development and selection of the new name.

“Horizon” symbolizes endless possibilities and a vision for the future, while “Heights” inspires reaching for the highest potential. Together, these elements capture the school’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded, future-ready learners in a welcoming environment.

The Board of Trustees applauds the efforts of all who contributed to this process, emphasizing the name’s alignment with the school’s values and spirit. While the name is new, École Horizon Heights School remains the same vibrant community committed to excellence, with its beloved eagle mascot and values intact.

The Renaming Committee carefully reviewed the 55 submitted names and narrowed them down to five final candidates. These names were selected based on how closely they align with the values of both the school and the Division. The Committee then presented the top five names to the Board for final review and voting. The final candidates were:

    • École Beaumont Heights School
    • École du Coeur School
    • École de Belle Colline School
    • École Mikisew School
    • École Grand Horizon School

Once their deliberations were done, the Board narrowed the list down to their top three choices. They ultimately decided on a name that was a combination of two of them: École Horizon Heights School. We thank all community members and students for providing name suggestions to the Division.

As the transition unfolds, families and students can look forward to new signs, jerseys, and opportunities to celebrate this milestone. The school invites everyone to join in honouring this exciting new chapter.

The Board of Trustees thanks the Renaming Committee, consisting of parents, students, staff members, and community representatives. The committee demonstrated their dedication and commitment ensuring a thoughtful process and result by providing the Board with a curated list of names for consideration. The student body voted on a name suggestion from their own ideas which was presented for the Board.  The final name selection was a combination of the school’s submission and a community member’s proposed name.

The name was revealed to the students in a celebratory assembly late this afternoon with great enthusiasm. More details to follow in the coming weeks and months, as the change will be a gradual process.
